Sam Endicott (August 13, 1974)
Vocal Range: E2 - G5
Associated Acts: The Bravery (2003 – 2011), The Mercy Beat (2014 - ?)
{Overview}
If any of you closely followed the 2000s post punk revival scene (like me) you'll likely remember an NYC band called The Bravery, fronted by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Sam Endicott. While having faded into obscurity, his vocals greatly stand out for sounding like a freak fusion between Julian Casablancas and Steve Bays. Sam's voice straddles a thin line between tenor and baritone, though the heaviness of his tessitura makes him sound more like the latter. His initial output featured him prominently crooning/belting in chest voice, topping around around F4 - G#4, and typically switching to his falsetto register for anything higher. Between The Bravery's 2nd and 3rd albums, he mostly eschewed his falsetto, instead belting into the upper 4th/lower 5th octave confidently (around the same time Julian started doing the same...odd). His lower register is an underrated facet of his voice, projecting well down into the middle of the 2nd octave. His style is far from technical, noticeably from some of his croaky high notes and slurred enunciation, though the conviction in his distinct delivery got his lovesick lyrics across and into the public's consciousness in the mid to late 2000's. After The Bravery's disbandment, Sam became the lead singer for The Mercy Beat, which released an EP in late 2014 (spoiler alert: his vocals there are 90% falsetto), and...nothing else, I guess. Seriously, what the fuck happened to this guy?
Fun fact: Sam also co-wrote Shakira's smash hit "She-Wolf" (??!!). Maybe the royalties were good enough that he could just retire lol
