Toni Kristian Kakko (16 May 1975 -)
Years Active: 1996 - present
Associated Acts: Sonata Arctica (1996 - present), Northern Kings (2007 - 2010)
Vocal Range: A1 - B♭5 (4 Octaves + 1 Semitone)
{Vocal Summary}Tony Kakko is a Finnish singer-songwriter, best known for fronting the power metal band, "Sonata Arctica". Kakko began his recording career as a voice of two sides- a methodical power metal belter, comparable to fellow Finn, Timo Kotipelto (who Kakko has admitted trying to imitate on SA's early albums), but also a sentimental balladeer, lending a puppy-dog-eyed delivery to Sonata Arctica's tender torch songs. These dual-faceted performances characterised SA's first three albums, with Kakko showing terrific ease of access to his mid-fifth octave (sustaining notes as high as G♯5 in studio) in a clean, clear and connected mixed voice. His lower register, whilst not particularly developed at this stage in career (rarely going below B2 in lead vocals), still proved serviceable when required, showing good dynamic sensibility and emotive delivery in that part of his range. Live performances from 1999-2003 were typically impressive, particularly considering how relentlessly high so many of the songs were situated, although some songs, such as "Weballergy" and "Blank File" gave Tony a lot of trouble, and "Wolf and Raven" has seemingly never been performed live in its original key.
Tony began to expand his vocal horizons outside of the power metal mould in 2004, with the release of their fourth album, "Reckoning Night". Where LPs one, two and three had been vocally rooted in soaring lead vocal performances, the three albums that would follow ("Reckoning Night", "Unia" and "The Days of Grays") were more focused in layering harmonies to create a richer soundscape, adding to SA's broadening sound. Kakko began experimenting with greater variety in tones, using hyperglottal compression to inject a raspy quality where appropriate, alongside his pristine clean sound. Whilst Tony was still regularly exercising his fifth octave on these records, these notes were often confined to overdubs, pulled back in the mix, with the more mid-range-centred melodies at the forefront. The collage of harmonised lines allowed Tony more flexibility with which melodies he would sing live, staggering the taxing high passages amidst lower ones. With more manageable tracks in the setlist to separate out the most challenging numbers from "Ecliptica", "Silence" and "Winterheart's Guild", Tony was able to deliver many of the best performances of his career around this time, with the 2004-2011 generally seen as his live peak.
2012's "Stones Grow Her Name" as an album marked a big shift, both for Tony as a singer and SA as a band. A lot of the heavy metal elements were toned down on this record, moving towards more of a melodic rock sound. Tony also began toning down the high singing, not only giving more time to his mid-range, but developing an impressive lower register too. Although, despite the high belts being sidelined for much of the SGHN album, his mid-fifth octave was still something he had in his locker, rolling back the years with a few powerful high moments, including a rather Steven Tyler-esque G♯5 in the track "Shitload of Money". Changes were also made to the live set- very few songs from the band's formative years have regularly made it into sets since 2012, and the few that do, such as "Full Moon", have been transposed several semitones lower. To his credit, Tony has adapted well to such a seismic change in vocal approach, with his low singing coming on leaps and bounds, even producing some commendable faux-baritone moments on occasions, despite his natural tenor voice (Kakko frequently improvises below E2 in the first verse of "Replica" when singing live, getting down into the first octave from time to time).
2018 marked a noticeable decline in Tony's access to his upper register, often either struggling with his fifth octave notes or dodging them entirely in the live setting. On Sonata's 2019 album, "Talviyö", Kakko kept a tight limit on the high singing in general, stating in an interview to promote the album that years of consistently singing far above his natural tessitura had been hard on his voice, and he wanted to make music that he could imagine "performing when we are older, like sixty, seventy." Kakko opted not to venture above C♯5 in the lead melodies on this album, and overdubbed high harmonies had a lighter, headier tone than before. The song "The Last of the Lambs" in particular showcased the most low-focused passage of Kakko's career so far, sounding very smooth around G2.
Overall, Tony Kakko is one of 21st century rock/metal's most accomplished frontmen, amongst power metal's greatest assets, and a combination of virtuosity and nuance that would give many of the all-time metal greats a run for their money. A formidable vocalist, with stellar technique and control over his instrument, and an innocent, naive demeanour to his delivery that is hard not to be charmed by. If the power metal high belts taken to the Nth term style of singing for which he is best known was always going to be unsustainable in the long run, Tony has done well to adapt his voice, and add new weapons to his singing arsenal to continue creating new music, and I am curious to see how we will further expand his vocal horizons in years to come.
