Ian Fraiser Kilmaster (24.12.1945 - 28.12.2015)
Years Active: 1965 - 2015
Associated Acts: Motörhead, Hawkwind, The Head Cat, Sam Gopal & The Rockin' Vickers
Vocal Range: F♯2 - F♯5
{Vocal Summary}Legendary vocalist/bassist for Motorhead, as well as Hawkwind and one time vocalist/guitarist for Sam Gopal. No doubt one of the most notorious yet iconic figures from the heavy rock and metal world (although Lemmy himself preferred to just all call it "rock 'n' roll"), Lemmy's cigarettes & whiskey laden husky voice along with his grimey bass guitar tone are two of the main hallmarks of the Motorhead sound. Never generally one to perform any show off-y range workouts, most of his recorded output consists of him usually staying within a certain "pocket" of his range (usually between E♭4-G♯4), with a few lines here and there trailing up to around the upper fourth octave. However, some of his most intense performances (which mostly took place throughout the 80s), called for him singing nearly entire lines in the B♭4/B4 area, even going into the fifth octave, a testament to his often underrated stamina and ability. His lower range is a bit of an enigma, he rarely fully utilized it and for the most part was quite growly, often to the point where it can become rather ambiguous what octave he's actually singing in. This is one of the few traits he showed off more strongly in Sam Gopal (where he sang exclusively clean; a far cry from his much more famed later career), as tracks such as "Grass" and "Yesterlove" showed a much cleaner and resonant low note technique that he really only demonstrated once in his later career ("Whorehouse Blues").
After what was once thought to be a nearly immortal lifetime (due to years of substance abuse with his body showing almost absolutely no signs of wearing out), Lemmy sadly passed on in 2015 due to prostate cancer and heart failure; while not known as the most technically sound vocalist, he still had a grand presence and timbre all his own that established him among of the greats of the metal genre and influenced countless other musicians within it (James Hetfield & Dave Grohl, to name but a couple) and will likely continue to do so in the decades to come.
