{Vocal Summary}Having studied at the Sibelius Academy and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, Tarja was already by 19-20 years old a pretty well-accomplished classically trained vocalist. An archetypal soprano with Sarah Brightman apparently being one of her biggest influences, her happiest hunting ground has since the beginning of her recording career been her light and heady upper register. Whilst her tone can be a little grating in large doses, one has to have admiration for her control which she usually displays in flamboyant trills and staccatos throughout the fifth octave and sustained notes sometimes as high as E♭6. Her early albums with Nightwish were dominated by soaring highs on tracks such as 'Stargazers'' and 'Wishmaster'. Gradually with the passage of time, her passages of softer singing and sensitivity of dynamics also began taking a greater precedence, particularly on her final two albums with Nightwish, 'Century Child' and 'Once', with the pinnacle of her upper range playing a slightly smaller role as a foil to more measured singing in the fourth and lower fifth octave. This is a trend that has largely continued since embarking on her own solo career, though even tracks in recent years such as 'The Golden Chamber' or her cover of 'Supremacy' have continued to display her upper range to its fullest extent.
Although she has often had a penchant for dramatic lower spoken passages in some songs (with a surprising natural speaking tone around F3-D3 considering her usually very light timbre) for most of her career Tarja hasn't really pushed herself to access her lower register, with her first four albums with Nightwish featuring very little singing below A3 and nothing sung at all below G3. Since then, she has displayed some nice enough stuff down to F3 on tracks like 'Creek Mary's Blood' and 'Lucid Dreamer'. 2016's The Shadow Self saw Tarja delve considerably further into her lower register with backing vocals down to C3 and a generally more assured tone to her singing in the third octave; another good recent outing for her lower register is 2017's 'Pie Jesu'.
