Mathias Blad is the majestic singer of Swedish power/folk metallers Falconer and probably one of the most unique singers in European metal. In a world dominated by 5th octave wailing by high placed tenors or gruff mid range singers, Blad's noble and smooth theatrical baritone timbre continues to set him and his band apart. His background as a professional musical theatre actor is apparent in his precise diction and vibrato that he uses to great effect with both English and Swedish languages.

Despite his lower voice placement and tessitura than most power metal singers, Blad does have a light side to his voice that is incredibly well developed. His ability to carry his mezza voce throughout his range up to surprising heights is well utilized on tracks such as Catch the Shadows, the outro of the music video version of Carnival of Disgust, or the bridge of For Life and Liberty. The legato phrasing present in these moments isn't exclusive to his higher register either though as demonstrated by moments such as the low range intro to Northwind. This in conjunction with his higher belting and willingness towards experimenting with a cappella and harmonies is a good demonstration of the "singer's singer" quality that Blad consistently exudes. A truly underrated talent and one of the finest singers in the genre by my estimation.
