{Vocal Summary}Yamantaka Eye is one of the most infamous members of the Japanese underground music scene. Eye's first and most brutal venture into infamy was with the harsh noise band Hanatarash, in which Eye yelled, screamed and howled his way through the songs, sometimes spouting obscenities in poor english. The group was notorious for their on-stage violence and disregard for audience safety, eventually culminating with Eye trashing the venue they were playing at with a bulldozer causing thousands of dollars in damages.
This aura of aggressive experimentation carried on through Eye’s vocal style which mostly consisted of furious yelling and screeching with his piercing falsetto. Eye would often scream in the 6th octave through entire songs, as seen in songs like “TV Eye” or basically the entire Naked City discography. This terrifying display often gave the songs an aggressive edge and went on to influence several experimental vocalists, including the one and only Mike Patton himself.
Towards the end of the 90s Eye started to mellow a bit and started to opt for a more melodic approach. Around the end of the millenium his band Boredoms released the albums Super Æ and Vision Creation Newsun, which featured Eye singing with a less experimental approach. These albums would end up being the best received albums from the group and are considered by many to be Eye’s magnum opus. After that he became less and less involved with singing and took up of more of a conducting role.
