Mattias Eklundh is a musician who defies categorization. He's one of the most original guitarists to come out of Sweden in the last 30 years and his work with the off-kilter rock/metal band Freak Kitchen showcases a unique combo of forward thinking musicality and lyrical satire. Though his innovation and technical expertise as a guitarist is his most celebrated feature, Eklundh is no slouch vocally either. Given the eccentric and often satirical nature of Freak Kitchen's lyrics, his vocal approach is punchy and direct: a unique merging of conversational diction with a tendency towards powerful belting. The experimental nature of his guitar playing also translates to his singing as he's not afraid to push his range in some rather extreme directions to achieve whatever musical effect he desires, and it is this devil-may-care freedom of exploration that makes Eklundh one of my personal heroes.
