He might sing low, he might sing high, He's done an awful lot of waiting in his lyrics. The man, the legend, the ambassador of New York; Julian Casablancas.
Jules has had quite the evolution as a vocalist since his heyday. His first few albums/EPs with The Strokes featured him performing primarily from the upper 2nd octave to the middle 4th. His voice instantly stood out; a slurred yet strong, heavy, moderately raspy timbre enhanced by a distorted microphone. His delivery also had a sense of sarcasm and melodic timing, further enhancing his vocal personality. His rasp was most noticeable in his higher register, as his lower notes sounded more clean in comparison. By The Strokes' 3rd album, First Impressions Of Earth, Julian's vocal tone sounded somewhat clearer and crooner-esque, and he had expanded his range to cover high 4th octave and middle 2nd octave notes, possibly due to his newfound sobriety.
The expansion of his range and reduction of his raspiness continued across his next projects. His solo work from 2008 to 2010 featured him singing with an almost entirely clean tone that became standard for him, as well as some surprisingly strong tenor range belting. His return with The Strokes, Angles, gave a bit more focus to his falsetto, an area of his voice that had been heard in spurts previous to the album. By the time their fifth album, Comedown Machine, was out, falsetto was Julian's primary weapon of choice for higher register notes. He'd taken his range up to the mid 5th octave solidly, while still showcasing strong 2nd octave vocals. Then he released Tyranny, with his 2nd band, The Voidz. Every vocal style Julian had attempted up to that point was on display and pushed to 11 in that record: his gritty, distorted chest voice, delicate falsetto, mid-range crooning, mixed 5th octave belting and some heavy low notes. The record could be seen as the apex of Casablancas' vocal evolution, with challenging, multiple octave/vocal technique spanning performances on songs such as "Human Sadness" and "Nintendo Blood". Some of these last few albums make for straining, pitchy moments in live performances, as well as switching falsetto notes for chest/mixed notes, but for the most part, he handles the performances well. His next record with The Voidz featured similarly ambitious vocal parts, though with less moments of rasp (the same applies to his EP with The Strokes and other work at the time). Not to be outdone, his most recent record with The Strokes, The New Abnormal, features some of Julian's most polished performances to date. His falsetto here has grown more smooth and angelic sounding, while still displaying slightly distorted yet clear sounding high chest notes and lower register notes that are about as strong as usual. {Questionable Notes}B♭5 ("New York City Cops" [1]) G♯5 ("All the Same" [4], "Rhythm Song" [4]) G5 ("Jam From Bilbao BBK Festival [4], "One Way Trigger" Live In New Hampshire [5]) G♯4 ("Aimless Jam" [5])

[1] marks yelps and short trills in high range or anacrusis and short dips in low range. [2] marks notes of questionable identity that cannot be confirmed to be the singer in question. [3] marks non-melodic notes that don't have a significant enough pitch to warrant inclusion. [4] marks notes that possess uncertain pitch or have been pitch-shifted. [5] marks notes that do not fit the previous criteria but are not of a substantial enough quality to warrant counting towards the singer's range. {Discography}The Strokes: Is This It (A2 – G4 - E♭5) Room On Fire (A2 - G♯4) First Impressions Of Earth (E♭2 – B4 - C♯5) Angles (G♯2 - F♯5) Comedown Machine (E2 – B♭4 - F♯5) Future Present Past (B2 – E♭5) The New Abnormal (G2 – E5 – F5) The Voidz: Tyranny (C2 – F5 – F♯5) Virtue (E2 – D5 – F♯5) Like All Before You (E2 - D5 - E5) Solo: Phrazes For The Young (E♭2 - C5 - C♯5) {Bolded Notes} F5 " Nintendo Blood", " The Adults Are Talking" E5 " Human Sadness" E♭5 " OBLIVIUS", " Under Control (live in Lollapalooza)" C♯5 "Chances"C5 " 30 Minute Boyfriend", " Boombox", " Nintendo Blood" B4 " Leave It In My Dreams" B♭4 " Juicebox" A4 " Bad Decisions", "Tourist"G♯4 " Ize Of The World", " Ode To The Mets", " Selfless" G4 " Take It Or Leave It", " Vision Of Division" F♯4 " Reptilia" F4 " Glass" B♭2 " On The Other Side" A2 " 30 Minute Boyfriend", " Aimless Jam" " Bad Decisions", " Modern Girls & Old Fashion Men" G2 " Wink" F♯2 "I Turn My Back on Everyone Jam", " Killing Lies" E2 " Xerox"

i see absolutely no reason not to count the Eb2s in ask me anything I didn't count them because of how brief they were. They kind of felt like anacruses. I guess I could count them though, they are repeated and somewhat audible

IMO The C5 in Boombox should be highlighted. It's one of his most powerful high notes.

Nice research, is there an E♭2 in "Off To War"? i just hear the slide from G2 to C2, btw that G5 doesn't sounds accidental to me The E♭2 occurs when he says "baby". As for the C2 slide, I heard it just now. I thought he didn't get down to C2. Brief but solid enough (moreso than the E♭2's from Ask Me Anything actually?). The G5 still sounds like he just overshot an F♯5 and cracked into G in my opinion. I took your suggestions as well, thanks a ton for them.

HOLY SHITBALLS EVERYONE I'VE FOUND THE RARE JULIAN CASABLANCAS G5 THIS IS NOT A DRILL AND THE NOTE IS UNDISPUTABLE It's pretty disputable If the doubtful you see is electric notes and could be shift-pithced or something like that, they aren't, he ususally use autotune in last performances with "the Voidz" mainly in radom live Jams, usually the autotune just change the sound and voice but not the tone. Even in last Voidz album autotune is used many ocassions in his voice in the same way. Here for example they applicated overtones or an octaver into autotune, and it's pretty clear when the notes are sung by him and when they're not: at 1:12 clearly he's singing falsettos, but starting 1:26 clearly isn't his voice

He uses a VoiceTone pedal and he's most certainly changing the pitch, that's what the pedal does. youtu.be/qwn5mCwr5Jc It's so obvious that he's pitch shifting live as he's clearly turning the knobs on the pedal live.

uhhhhhhhhh i fixed some coding issues to yo thread and added bold links to the thread instead of spoiler(most of them you could add the rest) {Spoiler} Julian Casablancas (August 23, 1978) Vocal Range: C2 - F♯5 (3 octaves, 6 semitones) Associated Acts: The Strokes (1998 - present), The Voidz (2013 - present) {Vocal Summary}He's one of the most recognizable voices in 21st century popular music.
By The Strokes' 3rd album, First Impressions Of Earth, Julian's vocal tone sounded somewhat clearer and croon-y, and he had expanded his range to cover high 4th octave and middle 2nd octave notes, most likely due to his newfound sobriety.
Bold links for "30 minute boyfriend", "Tourist", "Take it or Leave It", "Glass" and "Modern Girls and Boys" are all dead I can still access them. Perhaps it's a regional issue (topic channel, amirite) I thought that might be the case but just wanted to raise the issue in case it was like that for everyone. Shame for me
