{Vocal Summary}Best known as the frontman of the Australian rock group Hoodoo Gurus, Dave Faulkner's snappy vintage-inspired songwriting and sarcastic, schlocky sense of humor led the band to become well-renowned in their home country during the '80s, as well as leading to significant popularity in the US college rock scene. Having started out as a punk singer under the stage name of Dave Flick, he maintained an element of punkish garage snottiness in the tone of much of his subsequent singing, but tempered it with a smoother, more technically proficient side that came out in the Gurus' power-pop songs. A high baritone capable of belting up to A4 (and sometimes higher) with ease, he also boasts a reasonably strong lower register and frequently ventures down into the second octave, though he never really went below F#2 until middle age. Though his melodic falsetto capabilities aren't much to write home about, he has a tendency to let out raw, piercing high screams in his more energetic songs, even slipping into whistle register on a couple occasions. Now in his sixties, his voice has changed remarkably little from its heyday 35 years ago, with his belting abilities largely intact- the only noticeable change is that his lowest notes have become somewhat more comfortable with age- and he will likely continue to crank out catchy rock tunes for a few more years yet.
