Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader draws influence from an eclectic assortment of performers. Her career beginning in Fairground Attraction in the '80s, Eddi's distinct voice and warm on-stage persona became popular after the release of hit single "Perfect". This allowed her to break off on her own hugely successful solo career in which she further explored her own voice and began songwriting.
Eddi's voice could quite accurately be described as "incredibly Scottish", with her accent coming through strongly in her live performances. An agile soprano in her earlier work, Eddi's vocal approach was a rather quirky one, oftentimes showing her influences from jazz music by frequently flipping into her gorgeous, delicate head voice. Though her voice has deteriorated very little over her career, her once less confident lower register strengthened dramatically over time, hitting comfortable third octave notes in her most recent albums.
{A Few Examples of Her Voice}
This is the song that first got me interested in her, courtesy of Breakfast in D-sharp.
A lovely live performance from her early career. Really shows off her energy.
Something late career showcasing her lower register.
