{Detailed bio}
One of my favorite singers of all time, and an absolutely unmistakable voice, Paul Stanley has been the co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Kiss since 1973, serving in the role of "The Starchild" makeup character. He's very easily recognizable for his dark-toned but high-wailing voice, as well as his very distinct vocal delivery, that he frequently also uses to deliver entertaining and at times down right ridiculous stage banters between songs. However, aside from that, he has demonstrated some truly remarkable vocal talent over the course of his career, and has proved himself to be much more of a multi-faceted vocalist than people often give him credit for.
Stanley co-founded Kiss alongside bassist and co-lead vocalist Gene Simmons after the dissolution of their previous band, Wicked Lester, in 1973, and on to recruit lead guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer/vocalist Peter Criss to create their initial, "classic" lineup. This lineup lasted for the rest of the 70s, and birthed many of Kiss' best-known songs, including "Rock and Roll All Nite", "Detroit Rock City", "Beth", "Shout It Out Loud", and "Love Gun". During much of this period, Stanley already had his signature vocal phrasing and delivery developed, but his technical abilities were still much more raw and unrefined. He was able to sing up through the fourth octave and into the lower fifth octave regularly, but at times could start getting shouty on notes around B4/C5, and typically wouldn't venture further than C♯5 for song melodies. However, certain more belty songs, such as "I Want You" and "Tonight You Belong to Me" hinted at a growing potential that he would continue to develop in the '80s.
The major shift in Stanley's vocal development occurred in 1982, however, when he truly began to grow into his own as a fifth octave belter/wailer. This first became audible on the Killers compilation from 1982, which featured four new Kiss tracks with more intense vocals than anyone had heard from Stanley yet, particularly the song "Nowhere to Run". This newfound ability to easily carry melodies up into the fifth octave with power and agility was only further showcased on Kiss' next full length album later in 1982, Creatures of the Night. From there on, Stanley's vocal performances only continued to get wilder and more flashy with every subsequent Kiss release, as notes like D5 and E♭5s started to become easy achievements for him, and started to show up in the melodies of almost every song.
Perhaps the most impressive and outright vocally insane period of Stanley's career was in the late 80s, when Kiss started tuning their songs up to standard instead of E♭ for live performances, which gave him extra opportunities to show off his higher singing abilities. As if this wasn't enough though, he also very much got in the habit of "over-singing" many songs live during this time; frequently taking songs that originally topped around B4/C5 and rangewanking them up to E5 or even F♯5 sometimes! Though it's hardly uncommon to hear about singers throwing in additional high notes to songs live, I can't say I've heard many cases of singers rewriting entire song melodies for that purpose before.
Though Stanley's voice mostly held up great up through the mid 2000s, his abilities/consistency started to decline starting from the late 2000s onward, which especially became noticeable during live shows. Though he is still able to pull off certain high notes in the lower fifth octave and such, his mid range seems to be quite shot, which results in numerous cracks and strained notes in the mid fourth octave during live shows. He has also released two studio albums with Kiss in the past decade or so (2009's Sonic Boom and 2012's Monster), on which he managed to still sing multiple melodies up to C♯5 or so and still sound mostly good, but there is admittedly some audible auto-tuning/studio magic going on with those albums as well. Nonetheless, these vocal issues in his old age do nothing to take away from how staggeringly impressive his abilities were for most of his career, and I must give him kudos for still continuing to try to power through regardless.
Outside of Kiss, Stanley has also released two solo albums, his 1978 self-titled and 2006's Live to Win, and has experimented with some surprising side projects that show different sides of his voice than you might expect to here. One of these was a 1999 production of Phantom of the Opera that he starred in playing the title role, and actually did a surprisingly good job in! This role required him to adapt his vocals to a more musical theatre style, something we had only ever heard him hint shades of on Kiss' 1981 album Music from "The Elder", but it was very cool to hear him explore that type of singing more thoroughly in this production! Aside from that, he has also started his own R&B/soul cover band in recent years, called Paul Stanley's Soul Station. This group does occasional performances at venues along the US West coast, and performs covers of classic Motown numbers - something I certainly wasn't expecting to hear Stanley doing. He also manages to pull off his role in that group decently though, and uses it as an opportunity to show off his falsetto on most songs - something that he is still regularly capable of doing, and doesn't cause him nearly as much strain or difficulty as performing Kiss classics does. Perhaps Soul Station will end up becoming his primary focus once Kiss disbands; we'll have to see.

{Vocal range video}
Here's the range video I made for him back in 2013. It's mostly still accurate, though it includes a yelped D6 that I wouldn't consider part of his vocal range these days, and doesn't have his lead vocal F♯2s or his backing vocal D2s because it predates those. Other than that, I would say I wish I had started his highs a bit lower and his lows a bit higher, so who knows...maybe I'll end up remaking it again somewhere down the line.
