The highly acclaimed guitarist for neo-progressive rock band Marillion, Steven Rothery is a remarkably tasteful and melodic guitarist in the same vein as his heroes David Gilmour, Steve Hackett, and Andy Latimer, and one of my all—time favorite guitar players. While Marillion’s music has evolved from Genesis-inspired prog, with frontman Fish at the helm, to a more mellow alt-prog, featuring the lovely voice of Steve Hogarth, Rothery’s guitar playing remains the group’s secret weapon; Rothery is able to play lush, atmospheric arpeggios, hard rock riffs, and gut-wrenching, climactic solos, sometimes even within the same song.
I decided to expand the solos list to include more of his studio work, including a guest spot with Mick Pointer’s post-Marillion band, Arena, and I made a separate list for his live solos (which I hope to expand once I listen to more of their many live releases). I’d also like to create a riffs list as his riffs on “Hooks in You”, “Sugar Mice”, and “Cover My Eyes (Pain and Heaven)” are bangin’, but I’m not sure if I could expand that to a top 10 list.
