Best Drumming Performances: 1. Capillarian Crest ( Blood Mountain) 2. Hearts Alive ( Leviathan) 3. Blood and Thunder ( Leviathan) 4. The Wolf is Loose ( Blood Mountain) 5. Iron Tusk ( Leviathan) 6. Blasteroid ( The Hunter) 7. Blade Catcher ( Blood Mountain) 8. The Last Baron ( Crack The Skye) 9. Colony of Birchmen ( Blood Mountain)10. Black Tongue ( The Hunter) Brann Dailor is the incredible drummer, and occasional lead vocalist, of Mastodon. Dailor is well renowned for his incredibly fast playing, as well as his ability to play complex patterns and beats. Brann’s influences come from classic metal groups such as Motörhead, Slayer, and Iron Maiden, prog groups like Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson, as well as jazz and fusion players like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, and Billy Cobham. These influences add to Mastodon’s diverse sound, with Dailor’s ability to play speed metal grooves one minute before jumping into a four-limbed polyrhythm workout (sometimes while singing lead and backing vocals!) pairing well with Brent and Bill’s complex guitar parts and Troy’s restrained and melodic bass. I’ve been meaning to listen to 2017’s Emperor of Sand all the way through, and dive more into The Hunter and Once More ‘Round The Sun, but I feel this list is a good start. Also, I’m tempted to add a few songs like “The Motherload” due to the fact that he has to sing lead over an already tricky drum part.
