A seminal figure of the Californian Palm Desert scene and of the stoner rock genre in general, Garcia is one of the genre's most distinctive voices and enduring icons. Having started his career as the frontman for the pioneering group Kyuss, Garcia was one of the defining features of the band's classic sound along with Josh Homme's earth-shaking guitar tone, Scott Reeder's (succeeding Nick Oliveri) punchy, intricate basslines and Brant Bjork's thunderous drum grooves. Garcia's most immediately distinct feature vocally is his desert-tinged grit, which has remained fairly consistently powerful throughout his nearly 30 year career, initially keeping it focused in the fourth octave early on. However, post-Kyuss he began gradually making more & more use of his fifth octave, making way for some pretty astoundingly powerful performances not expected from those only familiar with his work in Kyuss (these can be best heard in his work with Unida and Vista Chino). In addition, he has shown surprising versatility over the years by also implementing more sentimental, softer mezza-voce like singing as well (as heard in the Unida track "You Wish" and his two guest appearances with the Belgian group Arsenal). His lower range seems to be rather understated in comparison, rarely if ever employing it for any melodies lower than B2, an aspect of his voice I would like to see him give more presence. Overall, Garcia's consistent efforts and iconic status have given way to an incredible body of work, and it will be intriguing to see where he will go next.
