Best known as the singer for 80s hard rock band Badlands, in addition to his stint replacing Glenn Hughes on Black Sabbath's Seventh Star tour amongst several other projects, Ray Gillen had a sadly fairly short lived career that reached some quite grand heights in spite of it's length. Often compared to the likes of David Coverdale and Robert Plant, Gillen had a knack for raspy blues-styled rock singing that can certainly be held close to the same esteem as those two, being easily able to sing powerfully and with great agility in his higher range, an aspect he was certainly not shy to show off (such as in Dancing on the Edge; which is sung almost entirely around E♭5!). Early on, he used a much cleaner almost power metal-esque technique until his time in Badlands where he began to employ a subtle distinct rasp which fit in well with the band's more blues-based style. His lower range was unfortunately hardly ever used in comparison, however had his career gone longer he may have possibly explored it much more. Gillen sadly passed away from an AIDS related illness in 1993, yet he still stands out to this day as one of the strongest and most proficient voices in 80s hard rock, who knows how much farther his voice would have evolved had he lived on.
