Chad Gray is a true monster of vocal distortion. Through his work with nu metal innovators Mudvayne and groove metal tour dogs Hellyeah, Gray has made a name for himself with his throat splitting screams and gritty as fuck belting. There's seemingly no end to the amount of vocal destruction he can bring in this department, yet he also possesses one of the most earnest clean singing approaches of the nu metal era. Up until 2008 his low register mainly appeared in a background context but since that year he's demonstrated impressive melodicism in the lower baritone range as well, rounding out his otherwise all guns blazing vocal style with an effective form of contrast.

There are some quick B4s and sustained Bb4s in the outro of "Hell of a Time" from 3:49 onwards

There's a spoken note at 4:10 too, which I think might get down to Bb1, though I'm not sure if it's countable.

That spoken note sounds like an Eb2 and then a trail off that's rather unintentional in pitch, which is why it's in the spoiler as a C2. I guess I could add the Bb4s but I'm not sure the B4s are that important since he has a handful of C5s in that song (including a brief one in that same passage).

"Now your nightmARE" - Sounds like a solid backing A1 to me but Hennessy wasn't convinced. Does anybody else hear it? Also, at 4:16 there is a belted C5 on "I just wanna PLAY a game" during the fadeout. Would you consider that to be lead vocal?


"FOR ME" - Bb1 maybe? And, regardless of pitch, what coding would you use (i.e. underlined, italic, non-italic etc)?


Would you consider the "NO MORE NOTHING" backing vocal C2 here to be spoken or sung? Also, the same question applies to the E2 at 1:55 on "no more ME" but I'm also curious about whether you'd call that a lead vocal note or not.


Till 3:09 - What would you count this fry passage for? I hear a fairly solid (albeit still totally fry) G#1 at 3:04 on "DON'T NEED your sympathy or empathy" while much of the rest swims around the B1-C#2 area. The main question is whether or not that note is too brief to count for the range expansion it creates
