Harry Lillis Crosby Jr. (3 May 1903 - 14 October 1977)
Years Active: 1926 - 1977
Vocal Range: C2 - G♯4
{Vocal Summary}A precursor of sorts to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Bing Crosby is often cited as a pioneer of the "crooning" style of singing. Being among the first to take full advantage of the microphone and its capacity for more intimate singing, Crosby most commonly sings in a softer, more laid-back manner when compared to predecessors such as Al Jolson. This is most evident in his early career, during which he had a much brighter tone and bridged early in his upper range so as to better control the dynamics of his vocals. That said, what his voice matured into has proven to be more endearing in the public eye; often referred to as a bass-baritone, Crosby possessed a very strong and oftentimes effortless lower register that he used to great effect throughout the latter half of his career. Despite this, Crosby as a singer was one who was very tasteful when it came to exploring the range of his voice, almost always staying within his comfort zone. Though this may make him seem tame in comparison to singers who succeeded him, his appeal was never in being flashy. Instead, Crosby's voice and delivery carries an air of positivity that resonated with many people of his time and continues to provide enjoyment to people more than four decades after his death.

DISCLAIMER: Given the recording technology used throughout the first half of Bing's career, it is possible that pitches found in studio recordings from 1926 to around the mid-1930s as well as various pitches found in radio broadcasts could be slightly off. There isn't much of anything that can be done about this as it is due to how the recording itself was made.
About:
Perhaps one of the most influential recording artists of all time, Bing Crosby is rooted deep in the heart of modern music. Having started out in 1926 as a nameless singer in the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and soon after gaining enough of a following to warrant the spotlight, Crosby's music and success story inspired many artists after him, including but most certainly not limited to Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Andy Williams. This inspiration was for good reason, of course; during the 1930s and 1940s, Crosby was arguably the most renowned name in popular music and a singer that many aspired to be like. Despite this, very few within the same vocal camp as Crosby managed to make a name for themselves alongside him. The ones that did, however, could likely be considered as having more artistic integrity than Crosby, who was seemingly more interested in creating music that is fun than creating much of anything coherent or deep. This is likely a consequence of his time, however, as the beginning and eventual apex of his career both took place whilst singles were the main way through which to digest music. Regardless, and though he is oftentimes overlooked in favour of singers who came after him, Bing Crosby was a musical game-changer who has proven himself to be influential even to modern day artists, if only indirectly.
