{Vocal Summary}The rhythm guitarist and a vocalist for the renowned band the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir is a rather well-known figure in the history of rock music.
Weir sang lead vocals on a large amount of the Grateful Dead's songs. Though he isn't the most technically stable vocalist per se (his technique having similarities with John Lennon), he has a very notable charismatic, belty delivery that yielded such iconic recordings as "Sugar Magnolia" and "Samson and Delilah". A sweet spot of his voice would be his aforementioned belting range; the mass majority of his most well-known recordings feature it in some way and it's where his charisma shines through the most, oftentimes going for a gritty, fierce delivery. That said, Weir is also no stranger to more pleasant deliveries and has fair mezza voce up to around G4. Beyond this, he also has a large amount of raspy wails, as exemplified by live versions of "One More Saturday Night" and "Hell in a Bucket". These again aren't the most stable generally, but nonetheless add another level to the manic nature of some of his vocals. He also makes use of falsetto relatively frequently, though his is not one that is particularly well-developed, often sounding rather airy and tonally unstable. Despite having more of a baritonal timbre in comparison to fellow Grateful Dead bandmate Jerry Garcia, Weir tends to refrain from using his lower register too much, seldom singing lower harmonies and only entering the second octave a select few times during his 50+ year career. As such, it isn't particularly strong.
Weir's voice, especially given the nature of many of his vocals in his prime, has aged well. Although he has understandably lost some stamina in his belting range, he can still deliver on many of his more demanding songs consistently. He is also still able to wail in the fifth octave when he so chooses, though he doesn't as frequently. However, although Weir's voice has held up decently for his old songs, his new music tends to focus moreso on his midrange and even provides a better glimpse into his lesser used lower register. This is likely where Weir is most comfortable vocally nowadays.
Overall, despite a couple technical flaws throughout his voice, Bob Weir as both a vocalist and guitarist makes for a consistent and imperative part of the Grateful Dead sound and one that has garnered quite the following.
