{Vocal Analysis/Bio: Written by clem }
Stephen Eric Pearcy is an American singer-songwriter, best known for founding and fronting the hard rock/metal band "Ratt".
Pearcy is a bit of a vocal anomaly of his scene; a much more streamlined voice than many of his more technically accomplished peers. A natural tenor, in his most successful years Pearcy's style was largely based in his very chesty brand of belting, complete with distinctive snarl of the Alice Cooper or Dave Mustaine variety. Whilst this abrasive tone was quite possibly as much down to underdeveloped breath support as it was stylistic preference, Pearcy's upper ceiling in his prime was a surprisingly high one, sustaining belts up to E♭5 in studio. His live singing has always been more patchy; sometimes replicating studio efforts quite faithfully, and other times struggling with the high melodies.
Over the course of his career, Pearcy's voice gradually deepened, and from the early 1990s he began to incorporate more low and mid-range singing into his material, sounding surprisingly smooth even as low as D2 in more recent takes.
Overall, Pearcy's instrument is an unrefined, rough sort of voice, with few displays of virtuosity to note. But for all his shortcomings as a singer, Pearcy could arguably be considered all the more memorable and recognizable a performer for them, as evidenced by his record sales in excess of 18 million.
