{Description}
Most known as the main creative force behind English electronic band Depeche Mode, Martin L. Gore's dark, provocative meditations on love, sex, society and loneliness have made for some of the most influential, respected music of the past 40 years. Although he is not the group's frontman, Martin's vocals remain an important part of Depeche Mode's sound, providing backing vocals and harmonies counterpoint to Dave Gahan and performing as lead vocalist on several of the band's songs. He has also made solo releases with prominent vocals and has provided backing vocals to other artists as well, with his soft, vibrato laced tone making for one of the most distinct voices in popular music.
Martin's vocal placement is an interesting one, to say the least. His voice is relatively light and clear sounding in its upper register, often providing the higher backing vocals to Dave Gahan's lower placed leading vocals. In spite of this, Martin is not a particularly high placed singer. His placement is actually very low for a tenor, usually singing within baritone range on leading performances and with backing vocals that usually peak around mid-to-upper fourth octave. He has no issue with singing any of Dave Gahan's parts in demos or covers with a similarly dark timbre, and in some cases, even performs these songs lower than Dave (seriously, the F2s from the "Clean" demo sound frighteningly deep). Even with his surprising vocal depths, he sounds rather comfortable around the G4-A4 area of his chest voice, though his falsetto register begins to take over around this part of his range. His falsetto is also quite capable and ethereal sounding when used. While not the rangiest singer, it could be said that Martin performs within the most comfortable parts of his voice, and does benefit from it (his smooth tone, strong vibrato and clear phrasing remain untouched throughout almost all parts of his range, and I've yet to see any bloopers or truly "bad" performances from him).
Martin's voice hasn't fluctuated much since his beginnings as a vocalist. His solo albums have given access for him to display his strong lower register, but his highs usually remain the same range wise (peaks around G4 to A4 in chest voice, B♭4 with falsetto) and lows typically down to A2 on Depeche Mode records (while taking leading vocals). His tone during live performances has ever so slightly changed with age (or possibly past alcohol intake), but he remains a very capable live performer into older age. Songs such as "Condemnation", "Walking In My Shoes" and "Lie To Me" display his higher notes being used for more extended periods of time without struggle (He holds a clean F♯4 live for about 13 seconds performing "Lie To Me"), while songs such as "In A Manner Of Speaking" and "Loverman" (both from solo recordings) display him using lower notes more extensively. All in all, a unique, smooth, pleasant sounding voice (which has been achieved without any formal vocal training, apparently).
