There's certainly a lot of competition on this front but to my personal tastes, Carl Albert is the single most underrated melodic metal singer of the 80s. His work in Vicious Rumors is iconic, demonstrating a tremendous high register and tonal resonance at every turn, not to mention an absurd level of natural confidence in delivery that could be equal parts calming (see a ballad like "When Love Comes Down") as it could be biting (see "Abandoned" among others). Just a true facemelter of a voice all the way through, and his live performances were equally intimidating. Sadly, his passing via an automobile accident in 1995 marked the end of a relatively short-lived career and I'm sure there was much more he would've given us, but thankfully his legacy lives on and continues to grow through the magic of internet accessibility and the brilliance of the music he made.
