{Vocal Summary}Alabama native/singer/songwriter/producer/seriously underrated guitarist Brittany Howard has garnered major acclaim and recognition with her ear catching musical projects. Most famously known as the frontwoman of Alabama Shakes, she has gone on to release a highly regarded solo album and collaborate and perform with a variety of musical artists, including rock band Thunderbitch (as its lead singer), Bermuda Triangle, Paul McCartney and many more. Running a gamut of styles ranging from scorching, heavy rock 'n roll/Americana to adventurous soul-infused garage rock to provocative, ornate rhythm & blues, her eclectic musical stylings are brought together by an root-sy, organic yet inventive approach to old school Southern U.S. based musical genres, provocative, heartfelt lyrics and, of course, a powerful, multi-faceted voice with a fervent Southern drawl.
Brittany Howard is a middle placed mezzo soprano, although earlier material featured more of a focus on higher notes. Her initial output with Alabama Shakes displayed strong 5th octave notes on just about every song, and less frequent, relatively breathy 3rd octave notes. Lots of fiery, gritty belting was present on their debut album "Boys And Girls", with striking power and comfort ("Hold On", "Be Mine"). Notes above E5 have more of a mixed head voice sound, which she has been demonstrated to use strongly up to B♭5. Among the somewhat distorted belting, there are also brighter, cleaner sounding vocals which also go easily into the fifth octave ("I Ain't The Same") and some lighter sounding head vocals, which reach up to a loose, almost unplanned sounding soprano high C on "You Ain't Alone". "Sound And Color", the band's second album, features the sweeter side of Brittany's vocals a bit more, with cleaner high belting and falsetto laden songs (“Guess Who”, “Future People”, plus there's even a pretty clear background E6 on the song "Dunes"). Her tone remains raw and fierce throughout the performances though, including massive belts on songs such as "Gimme All Your Love" and "Don't Wanna Fight". That same year, Brittany’s self-titled debut with hard rock group “Thunderbitch” displayed the harsher side of her voice, with grit laden performances that display strong distorted belts up tp F#5, and a slightly darker tone that contributes to a slightly more full sounding lower register (up to this point, the best displays of lower register were on “Closer”, ‘Goin’ To The Party” and “Over My Head”).
Once we get to Jaime, Brittany's solo debut, her lower register has grown much stronger, while also displaying her growing into cleaner high notes. There are relatively strong low notes down to C♯3 on this record, plus breathier yet impressive backing vocals down to G♯2. Her higher register is more delicately, but still frequently, used, with pleasant soft vocals on songs such as “Stay High” and “Georgia”, dynamic and powerful balladry in “Short And Sweet” and “Run To Me”, plus a strong mixed A5 on “Baby”. Given her guest appearances and live performances, she’s still shown to be capable of heavy, distorted high notes, which just goes to showcase the versatility and range of her passionate vocal stylings. Definitely an artist worth checking out if you haven’t already.
