Mr. Stainthorpe is a rather unusual frontman in the world of metal. As the singer for death/doom pioneers My Dying Bride, Aaron's withdrawn and focused stage presence coupled with his low range centered singing style is continues to be one of the band's signature traits. Despite this consistency Aaron has gone through noticeable vocal development over the years. Initially operating exclusively in an abrasive death growl, Aaron soon began to incorporate a large quantity of deep spoken word sections and clean baritone crooning that became increasingly prominent in the band's sound as the 90s grew on. In fact there are no growls at all from 1995's The Angel and the Dark River to 1998's 34.788%...Complete, but soon after this the growls returned albeit in a somewhat smaller quantity than before. There has since been another development in Aaron's vocal style in the last decade where he has begun to showcase something resembling a higher register that was barely ever used before the 2006 release A Line of Deathless Kings. This has allowed for his vocal diversity on albums to expand considerably as there is now a world of contrast to explore in his dramatic baritone timbre that there wasn't previously. Maybe not the most technically sound "singer" but certainly a fantastic vocalist for My Dying Bride and an underrated artist overall I feel.
