Having recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of his group UNiTE, Yui has cemented himself as one of the most versatile vocalists in the J-rock world. As a visual kei J-rock frontman, a dynamic and exciting vocal performance is often what is required - and with years of experience and a natural purity to his voice, Yui delivers electrifying vocals at the front of UNiTE's rock and metal songs. Songs like "Marble" demonstrate his lovely rock approach; a bright sound full of vigour, but with a pleasing natural weight to it. "abyss" and his other metal tracks, on the other hand, show a far more raw sound, one that maintains his signature sound but with heavier, distorted vocals. However, he is acutely aware of the value of variety; while songs like "Taihei Rhetoric" show off a stunning gritty belting style and his heavier performances will use distorted singing, he allows himself to harness his naturally pellucid tones depending on the context. UNiTE tends to liberally and actively mix genres, frequently incorporating elements of jazz, classical, indie and electronic music into their music, requiring different vocal approaches - a challenge Yui is happy to meet. Songs like "hellomusic" demonstrate an energetic jazz-pop performance, while the tender piano version of "io" prove that he is well-versed in soft, soothing ballads. He manages to remain consistent even when switching between registers, too; he has the ability to switch between full voice and falsetto virtually seamlessly, an ability that most of his styles put to good use.
