LINGUA IGNOTA (Kristin Hayter) is a multidisciplinary musician, composer, and sound artist who is classically trained in voice and piano and has also studied traditional Bulgarian polyphony. Hayter blends death industrial with neoclassical darkwave to engage in a radical recontextualisation of violent and misogynistic imagery, creating what she terms “survivor anthems” that grapple with her experiences of domestic violence.
A low placed mezzo-soprano, Hayter’s voice is especially strong in the upper third through the lower fourth octave, with a rich, dark tone enhanced by her distinctly lachrymose inflection. With a uniquely strong falsetto, Hayter is also comfortable in the fifth and sixth octaves, maintaining a full, round tone. Hayter has stated that she intentionally writes her music in keys that are awkward for her voice, necessitating frequent shifts between the head and chest registers as well as the use of different vocal colours and textures, lending imperfections to her already raw music. Hayter is also versed in a number of extended techniques, including the shrieks and screams of black metal, as well as polyphonic throat singing. Up to and including ALL BITCHES DIE, the lowest extremes of Hayter's regsiter tended to be either incredibly breathy or domianted by vocal fry - however, as of CALIGULA, she has exhibited the ability to fully support notes as low as D3, suggesting significant improvement in her lower register between the two albums.
