Francis Dunnery is one of my favorite kinds of artists to highlight on The Range Planet, because he is one of those individuals who is just under the radar of many people yet has an influential and active career of nearly 40 years. Most known as the guitarist and frontman for English progressive rock/pop fusion act It Bites in the 80s, he's proven himself to be an equally formidable session player and band leader in the years since their disbanding. His solo career spans a wide range of genres including memorable forays into hard rock, electronica, R&B, pop, and others all while maintaining his distinctive songwriting voice. Often mixing a tone of satire with personal and philosophical lyrical subjects, Dunnery has a distinctly English sense of artistry and it manifests in all aspects of his music.
While perhaps more celebrated as a virtuosic lead guitarist, there's quite a bit of substance to be found in Dunnery's singing as well. Early on he was quite an eccentric, often switching between a sort of wacky snarl and a more earnest clean tone and sometimes even going straight into character voices ala Peter Gabriel (whom he is often compared to). He then spent some time experimenting with grittier tones particularly on the Eat Me in St. Louis album before settling into a more reserved, almost folk derived vocal approach that characterized the acoustic era of his career. Nowadays he's prone to mix it all, but it's interesting that his low register saw a lot more use in his 20s and 30s compared to recent memory. This is especially notable in his 2016 re-recording of the Welcome to the Wild Country album wherein the low notes of the original are largely omitted, yet by contrast his belting register seems as strong as ever. An unusual vocal trajectory to be sure, but it cannot be denied that Dunnery's commitment and enthusiasm as a singer has remained a defining aspect of his music.
