{Description}Frontman to arguably the most successful founding post-punk revival band and one of Scotland's premier musicians, Alex Kapranos' role as lead vocalist and guitarist of Franz Ferdinand cannot be understated. Initially working a wide variety of jobs, including running music venues and playing in several Glasgow bands, Kapranos would form FF at the turn of the century, alongside band members Nick McCarthy, Paul Thomson and Bob Hardy. The group blends a classy, refined image encompassing Russian avant garde art and an energetic blend of anxious and cool in its music, which can also perfectly describe Alex's vocals.
Alex Kapranos' vocals have remained fairly consistent since the first Franz Ferdinand record, with the only major fluctuation in range being a moderate increase in high register vocals and falsetto during their third album, Tonight. Kapranos' voice has a clean, mature, somewhat heavy tessitura, with a fairly decent amount of range to boot. A large amount of Kapranos' performances reach the mid to upper 4th octave, loosely and comfortably, though his full voice capabilities grow limited above A4. Falsetto is not one of his primary weapons of choice vocally, but he has demonstrated solid usage of it up to the lower 5th octave. His ability to mix and lighten his normally weighty tone is also displayed on some songs, up to the heights of his full voice range. Alex does sing in his very capable, baritone lower register too, contrasting with some of his lighter sounding high notes. These displays of lower notes have been growing more frequent as of late, although he was already hitting strong middle 2nd octave notes in some of his first recordings in Franz Ferdinand. Overall, a very consistent, charismatic voice and one of the premier voices of post-punk revival.
