{Vocal Summary by Susilupus}
Dave Grohl: member of two of the most famous rock bands of the last few decades. As the drummer for Nirvana he helped to spearhead the grunge movement, and as the lead vocalist and guitarist for Foo Fighters he has solidified his place in both music history and in the mainstream. His music career had much more humble beginnings, starting off with various high school bands, including Freak Baby, who would later change their name to Mission Impossible and then Fast before breaking up. In late 1985 Dave joined Dain Bramage, a band which ended when Grohl left the band in 1987 to join Scream. He spent the next few years touring and recording with them, until their sudden dissolution mid-tour, after which Dave got an audition with future bandmates Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic through Buzz Osborne. He spent the next few years as a part of Nirvana, during which time he recorded his own solo album Pocketwatch, released under the pseudonym Late!. The band ended in 1994 after the tragic death of Cobain, and after Dave had spent some months mourning the loss of his friend, he recorded the first Foo Fighters album. After the album's release he recruited some band members and they quickly set to work, soon becoming one of the most popular rock bands of the modern day. Since their formation they have recorded multiple albums and have toured tirelessly, with their popularity only growing over the years. Alongside the Foos, Grohl has been a part of many projects, not least playing drums for Queens of the Stone Age, starting his own metal side project under the name Probot and starting Them Crooked Vultures with QOTSA frontman Josh Homme and ex-Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.
Dave's vocal style hasn't changed all that much over the course of his career. His high range has always been much more prominently used than his low range. He uses his high range most often up to around the upper fourth octave, with notes in the lower fifth being much rarer. Generally speaking, the higher he goes in his range, the more distortion he will tend to apply to his voice, particularly live. His lower range is fairly rare: most of the time he will only scrape the lower third octave, with second octave notes being rare and often sounding relatively uncomfortable for him. At the start of Foo Fighters career Grohl was lacking somewhat in vocal confidence, something that would only take a few years for him to deal with, as by the turn of the new millennium his singing was all the better for his newly found confidence. While he has occasionally used falsetto, he much prefers to use a chesty sounding technique in his upper register, often with distortion. Being a part of one legendary band is one thing. Being a part of two is quite something else, and that is something that Dave Grohl can claim to have achieved. Not that that ever goes to his head, as he is often referred to as the "Nicest Guy In Rock''. Dave, as the drummer for one band and the frontman for another, has more than earned his place as a permanent part of music history.
