Probably best known as the voice and face (and hair) of early MTV, which I suppose is easy to sneer at nowadays, but that grin is usually turned upside down when you find out he helped form some of the original punk rockers in Generation X. At some untraceable point in time he got old, but nobody bothered to tell him, and as a result, ever since his comeback with Devil's Playground he's been better than ever at singing vocal lines that would have seemed impossible for him in the past.

Possibly bold-worthy B♭2s here on the verses, a short G♭2 at 0:25, G♭4s at 2:05, 2:25 sounds like it could be a flat C5 followed by a series of strong B♭4s, and then possibly a D♭5 at 3:02.

I really like Billy's approach to singing music like this - his low register on those verses sounds nicely spooky and menacing, and then his regular fourth octave grit also serves the more energetic parts of the song quite well. If there's more stuff like this in his discography, I might be interested in hearing it.

The closest you'll get to that sort of thing in his solo stuff is "Evil Eye" and "Body Snatcher" on Devil's Playground. Maybe a bit on the "New Future Weapon" single as well.

That song came out in 2000, and I think the optimal time to have him do metal songs was 2005 - 2010 where he had a perfect balance between very chilling lows and super resonant upper fourth octave belts. The shouty approach he has there doesn't really hold a candle to what he could do on Devil's Playground.

I think he could still find great use for his lows on metal songs, particularly doing stuff à la that "Whiskey and Pills" E2 passage. His highs are still great but they are a bit thinner than around the late noughties, so the money zone would definitely be lower. I would certainly welcome more metal songs sung in that kind of low register.

Yo thanks for sharing this, this song is a certified banger! The phrasing in those C5 lines definitely sounds pretty tricky (reminds me a bit of Dexter Holland actually), though I also really love the gritty tone he achieves on the G4-A4 parts at the beginning of that chorus. The B4 at 2:19 also sounds pretty boldable to me.

Yo thanks for sharing this, this song is a certified banger! The phrasing in those C5 lines definitely sounds pretty tricky (reminds me a bit of Dexter Holland actually), though I also really love the gritty tone he achieves on the G4-A4 parts at the beginning of that chorus. The B4 at 2:19 also sounds pretty boldable to me.
