{Vocal Summary}Matt Berninger has vocals that could give every typical suburban dad a run for their money. With his deep, crooning baritone that could depress anyone within 50 feet of him, Matt Berninger has made his sad dad-like appeal even more trademarked with his vocals that he first employed in the national. His lower register is what he's most known for, perfectly emphasising the moody themes of midlife crisis, depression and white collar blues that The National is known for. Even though he is an incredibly low-placed singer, his upper register is surprisingly strong in the low-mid 4th octave. When executed well, Berninger's upper register is powerful and fierce enough to take on a jaguar then beat up the remaining residents of the jungle - his many live performances of Graceless have some incredibly strong belting prowess. On top of this, his screams in earlier albums like Alligator and Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers perfectly display a sense of desperation. Though not known for his versatility, Matt Berninger has certainly cemented his place in music history as indie rock's sad baritone dad.
