Saga's Michael Sadler occupies what I like to think of as the thespian side of the rock vocal spectrum. Especially early on in the band's career, he often sounded like he was reciting a dramatic monologue in song form, complete with the expressive vibrato, rounded tone, and precise diction that characterizes such a style. While he also indulged in the stacked vocal harmony approach that was popular with other bands of the same era, the arrangements lent a greater significance to his word choice than many of his peers. During this time, he kept within a comfortable middle register of his voice at most times, only breaking from it during backing vocal passages. As the story goes though, producer Rupert Hine worked hard to stop him from "singing like a choir boy" on the 1981 release Worlds Apart, causing him to experience a rather sudden range expansion that showcased greater heights and depths than ever before. His vocal progression from that point continued to impress as he took his dramatic vocal style to different realms, spending more time with his soothing low register and his newly found belting prowess. In the years since, Sadler has continued to find new musical environments for his voice to shine in, both as a guest for a myriad of different artists and in the still expanding Saga catalog.
