Kevin Nugent was the singer and guitarist for my favorite one-album-wonder metal band Legend. They were considerably ahead of their time with a sword and sorcery themed epic metal sound that was firmly grounded in prog rock and fusion influences of the 70s. It's a sound unlike any other, and the songs that inhabit their sole album demonstrate a power trio operating at the peak of their powers. Vocally, Nugent was a reserved storyteller who sounded a bit like a sage from a fantasy world, telling tales of warning to the next generation. He didn't push his voice much outside of a few isolated screams, but his tone contributed to their unique sound quite strongly. After Legend disbanded, Nugent left singing behind to focus on his virtuosic guitar skills in the band Mercenary until his tragic passing in 1983. The band accumulated enough material to release a posthumous tribute EP to him in 1989, but that is the extent of his commercially available recorded output. Nonetheless, I consider Nugent's short-lived career to be among the best of its kind, with Legend's Fröm the Fjörds in particular being one of the strongest albums of 1979.
