American harpist and singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom has an incredibly unique musical style. Described as in equal parts baroque pop and freak folk, her songwriting approach is an unorthodox one, oftentimes consisting of loosely-structured, lyrically dense songs that span upwards of ten minutes. Her voice is an unapologetically individual one - undoubtedly very high-placed and eccentric, Joanna's unusual nasal tone, diction and occasional shrill yelps make her voice one that is not easily palatable even after vocal nodule surgery smoothened some of her quirks. Underneath this however, she possesses a soaring head voice and a rather confident upper chest register; if you allow yourself to forgive some of her eccentricities, you'll be able to experience one of the most individual and talented singer-songwriters of the 21st century.
