{Vocal Summary}Gregory John Puciato is an American singer-songwriter, best known for fronting American mathcore pioneers - The Dillinger Escape Plan
First coming to prominence as Dillinger replaced their original vocalist, Dmitri Minakakis, Greg proved a suitable voice for the band’s ever-expanding sound, bringing clean, melodic vocals to the table, as well as upholding the false-cord screaming style of his predecessor.
From “Miss Machine”, TDEP’s first album with Greg, he was already incorporating sinister low crooning down to D2, reminiscent of Mike Patton (who had guested on a Dillinger EP two years earlier), and Trent Reznor-esque fourth-octave belts.
A natural baritone, Puciato spends a lot of his vocal time outside of his tessitura, with harsh screaming remaining the bread and butter of Dillinger’s sound on each album, but also managing to pull a tremendous amount of chestiness through his belting register, delivering an intense, steely tone up to D5, characterized by a high larynx position, with tracks like “Gold Teeth on a Bum”, and magnum opus - “Widower” serving as prime examples of his belting skill.
On Dillinger releases from "Ire Works" onwards, Puciato would also give greater outings to his falsetto register, adding a more vulnerable side to his vocal arsenal. Greg has been known to carry this technique into the mid-fifth-octave, with highlights such as “Parasitic Twins”, and the band’s unexpected cover of Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You”.
Whilst Greg has often had difficulty reproducing his clean vocals to the same standard live with TDEP, this could be attributed to his wildly energetic, and self-destructive performance energy, as his live efforts with synthwave project, The Black Queen, showcased a higher quality of singing, alongside a much less frenzied stage presence. In general, The Black Queen, amongst other projects, gave Greg greater room to explore his clean singing, layering his vocals with atmospheric synths to create more pensive arrangements.
Overall, Greg Puciato is a very capable frontman, and whilst his unpredictable antics on-stage might steal the show, his ability as a singer isn’t to be overlooked, spearheading one of the most groundbreaking, and musically diverse rock bands of the 21st century. Despite Dillinger looking unlikely to ever reunite, Puciato’s versatility through everything from extreme metal to electronica shouldn’t leave him stranded any time soon. Written by clem
