The voice behind jam band turned brief '90s crossover hitmakers Blues Traveler, John Popper is the main driving force behind their unique sound. Though more widely known for his astonishingly fast harmonica solos, Popper's vocal work is also surprisingly powerful when he chooses it to be. Straddling the line between baritone and tenor, he can convincingly pull off lows down to the bottom of the second octave and belting up to the top of the fourth, though the lower portion of his range tends to go largely underutilized in their mainstream material. Working with the harmonica has lent his lungs considerable strength and staying power, and his ability to spit multiple verses of lyrics at light speed (most famously demonstrated in the bridge of "Hook") is a particular strong point. Despite his tone occasionally getting a bit strained and his relative lack of comfort with his falsetto register, he has largely kept his voice intact over the years, and in his fifties he's still putting out some of his best vocal performances.
