{Description}
An unsung hero of R&B, Glenn Jones' 4+ decade long career has provided an immense collection of tracks featuring some of the finest singing ever heard across R&B, funk and gospel. A Florida native and natural choir boy since childhood, Glenn sang co-lead vocals on his own gospel music group, Glenn Jones & The Modulations, at the age of 16 alongside the King of Gospel himself, James Cleveland. One album later, Glenn would have the lead vocals all for himself, having further developed his vocal range and tone towards the style he is most known for. From here on, Glenn would take up secular music with contemporary R&B, funk and quiet storm, while retaining his gospel forged vocals and identity. Glenn is often held in high regard by those who know him for his emotive, sensitive lyrics revolving love and romance, his music education programs as founder of the Love Jones foundation and his talents as a guitarist, producer and singer/songwriter.
It is not a stretch to call Mr. Jones a virtuoso singer. He makes high placed melodies and twisty melismas sound easy with his strong yet silken vocal tone, keeping a masculine sound beyond tenor high C. His vocals also have a noticeable degree of humanity to them, with some looser, more gritty vocal moments, though his suave vocal stylings are easily his most distinctive vocal characteristic. On his first album with his gospel group "The Modulations", Glenn already displayed a rich, strong vocal sound, but their second album, "Feel The Fire" featured him an improved form, with a smoother vocal tone, greater pitch control and a more adept high register than before, now performing fifth octave belts and more controlled head voice and falsetto vocals. This became the standard for him across his discography, consistently reaching into tenor high C and beyond in almost all of his songs. He is an impeccable vocalist in many facets: his upper register allows for some of the smoothest, resonant and most controlled crooning and belting in soul and R&B well into the fifth octave. His style is quite melismatic and agile, quickly going from one note to another, though not without some moments of longer sustained notes. Each of his registers sound connected, with his higher 5th octave notes, while more head-y, sounding equally resonant and, at times, virtually indistinguishable his more chest connected notes. On two songs, Glenn even reached soprano high C with a surprising amount of control and power. From my own analysis, Glenn's falsetto and head voice starts taking more precedence around the middle of the 5th octave, though certain notes around E♭5 to F5 still sound connected and full. There's not much to say about his lower register in comparison; his lower notes sound decent into the lower 3rd octave but mostly fade in tone beyond that and are not as emphasized as those high notes with Glenn's own vocal style.
Entering older age, Glenn's vocals remain very well maintained and almost as strong as during his heyday, showcasing a mastery of the craft of vocals not many singers have achieved as well. I'm not kidding when I say that every song he's on is an incredible display of vocal prowess, though there are some clear highlights. Definitely check him out if R&B, 80's pop, funk or gospel with strong vocals interests you in any capacity.
