{Description}
With the dissolution of Joy Division after Ian Curtis' sudden passing, its member would adapt into a new group known as New Order, which took its cavernous, low-set post punk sound into new territory with electronic and dance music elements, thus becoming one of the most influential and praised bands of the 20th century. Their scrappy, anxious approach to rock, dance and pop music is notable down to the qualities of their lead vocalist, Bernard Sumner. Like Ian Curtis, Sumner possesses limited technical ability as a vocalist with a low-key, plain delivery. While he is higher placed than Curtis, Sumner also tends to sing from the upper 2nd to lower 4th octave (with several albums topping out at E4). On several performances (particularly from 1983 – 1986), Bernard displayed some consistent vocals up to A4 through both soft mixed vocals and belting. Despite not being particularly low placed, his aloof and pitchy upper register makes his lower register be the strongest facet of his voice by default. Sumner makes consistent usage of his lower register and sounds comfortable enough in the lowest reaches of his voice (that is to say, A2, and eventually, G2). Altogether, Sumner’s voice has a soft, pale quality to it that can sound pleasant, and…look, if you’re listening to New Order, you’re probably not looking for the most technically skilled vocals ever. Who even cares? If there’s something to be learned here, it’s this: Just sing. That’s all you have to do. Just sing and you too could make some of the most acclaimed, influential music out there. Going instrumental is always an option though…
