Robert Anthony Plant (August 20, 1948)
Member of: Led Zeppelin
Vocal Range: F♯2-C♯6
{Vocal Summary by Holsety }Robert Plant is the widely-known lead singer of Led Zeppelin. Famous for his limitless vocal gymnastics and setting the scene for range wankers to come, he has delivered some iconic performances with unsettling ease. His short vocal prime is responsible for some absolutely insane sirens and passionate belting, though his repertoire is somewhat limited to blues rock and hard rock, with some folk mixed in. As Led Zeppelin grew more diverse as a band, Plant became more limited as a singer, often delivering tense, yearning vocal performances over his bandmates with exceptional style. Since Zeppelin's breakup he's enjoyed success with his solo albums and projects with Jimmy Page lovingly labelled Page & Plant. Having mellowed out since the erratic, grotesque and obscene performances he delivered with Zeppelin (in the studio and the bedroom), he sometimes gives his sage words to the public or tours with a fun and strong setlist.
In early recordings Plant has a husky tone that suits him well for blues standards or various songs he works on. When he started working with Zeppelin he started working with vocal sirens and gritty passionate singing that seemed limitless. His voice sounds similar but clean and sexy on Led Zeppelin III. One can hear the wear in his voice by the time Led Zeppelin IV is out, seeing that he gets shrill in places where he didn't before. He didn't have a warm-up routine and he went all out at every live show. At one show in 1973 or so, he walked to a show in the rain with the flu and gave a blistering performance that cost him. In later Zeppelin albums he had a scratchy tone to his voice that we get moments of as early as Houses Of The Holy, with Physical Graffiti showing it off often as well. He mainly stays in a comfortable range on Presence, but he exaggerates his scratchy sound more on In Through The Out Door to sound lower than before. In harmonies he shows off clean sound in high harmonies to show he's making the intentional choice to manipulate his tone. His voice cleaned up a bit by the time he went solo, and in concerts in the 80s, 90s and even recently he will occasionally go for high screams and the like, but he isn't quite as tonally consistent as he was in his prime.
