Summary:
The frontman for Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder is one of the biggest names to come out of the Seattle grunge scene. He started his music career in the 80s, recording home demos alongside spending time in short lived bands in the local area. In 1988 he joined Bad Radio, a band he would be in until 1990, when he joined Pearl Jam (which would be the name they would choose after briefly going by Mookie Blaylock). Vedder was given a demo tape, he recorded some vocals and sent the tape back to his future bandmates, which led to him having a successful audition for the role of lead vocalist. When he flew up to Seattle to join the band, he also ended up providing vocals for the project Temple of the Dog that some members were already working on at that time. Pearl Jam didn't waste any time, with the band playing live shows straight away and beginning work on their debut album Ten by early 1991. From there they were catapulted into the mainstream very early on thanks to the aforementioned album. In 2007 Vedder started a solo career with Into the Wild, an album which was related to his work for the film of the same name.
A lot of Vedder’s melodies are based around the third octave with regular visits into the fourth. His vocals have stayed incredibly consistent over the years, in pretty much all aspects of his voice. He has a very strong lower register reaching down to the very bottom of the second octave. His high range is where he spends more of his time, most often in chest though he has demonstrated his falsetto technique fairly often as well. Most of the time he doesn't tend to go any higher than the upper fourth octave, though on occasion he has reached into the fifth octave. As a part of Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder has become a prominent feature of not just grunge, but rock music as a whole. He has certainly left his mark on the history of music.
