Summary:
Jay Kay is most well known as the lead vocalist for Jamiroquai. His music career started after a near death experience and a false arrest encouraged him to choose the path of a musician. He quickly came up with the band's name and sent a demo tape to the label Acid Jazz Records, who signed him. He then gathered band members, one of which was Toby Smith, a prominent songwriter for the band up until his departure in 2002. Kay was initially reluctant to let Smith join the band, but he was eventually persuaded to let him join by both his manager and Smith himself. The band started out by playing in the British club scene, and quickly got success with the release of their first album, Emergency on Planet Earth. They continued to build from there, fast becoming a household name with the help of multiple hit singles.
Kay has a strong upper register which he has used plenty throughout his career, with his lower range being much more rare. He tends to use either a falsetto or light chest voice technique in his high range, with belting not being his thing at all. The most noticeable change in his vocal style is that after Jamiroquai's second album, The Return of the Space Cowboy, he stopped using his mix voice into the fifth octave, a technique he used occasionally early on in his career. Other than that his voice and vocal style has stayed fairly consistent over the years. As the frontman for Jamiroquai, Jay Kay has become a household name. So much so, that many people often refer to the band as a solo artist. It is said about many bands and artists, but to few is the statement more applicable: Jamiroquai have an instantly recognisable, unique sound that none can quite imitate, and it is because of this, alongside their many popular songs, that the band, and Jay Kay, will be remembered and loved for a very long time.
