Summary:
Famous for his unusually high placed placed (and often somewhat polarising) voice, Kellin Quinn has become well known within post-hardcore and emo scenes as the frontman of Sleeping With Sirens. He started off his music career moving between various acts, such as Closer 2 Closure, For All We Know, Screenplay and Our Name in City Lights, none of which he was a part of for very long. He then went on to form Sleeping With Sirens in 2009 with members of For All We Know and Paddock Park. Since then, Sleeping With Sirens' sound has developed, Kellin' vocals along with it. Initially they favoured a mainly post-hardcore influenced sound, with some pop influences becoming more and more prevalent over time, a gradual change which cumlinated in the band's 2017 effort, Gossip. Their next album, How It Feels to Be Lost, marked a return to their post-hardcore sound, while still moving forwards and mainting the evolution of the band.
Kellin often reaches well into his high range, pushing the limits of his voice well into the fifth octave on multiple occasions. Over time he has gone into his higher extremes somewhat less, though the Sleeping With Sirens release How It Feels to Be Lost sees something of a return to his more extreme vocals, both in the heights he reaches as well as the return of his distorted vocals, something that was not present on the previous album, Gossip. He also uses falsetto on a relatively regular basis, though he definitely favours his chest and mix voice over the former. On the other hand his lower range, though not entirely underused, does not get as much of a look in as his higher range. While anything below the mid-third octave sounds very uncomfortable for him, it is certainly respectable for his placement. Sleeping With Sirens' popularity has only grown over time, a feat that is certainly in no small part thanks to Kellin's instantly recognisable voice. His difficult vocal passages have set the band apart from many, and whether you like him or not it is difficult to deny, his vocals are undoubtedly very impressive.
