Summary:
Many different bands and artists have had their fair share of the limelight over the past three decades, but few as often as Simply Red. Mick Hucknall, lead singer and songwriter for the band, has stayed an irreplaceable part of the popular music scene, thanks to Simply Red’s commercial success, something due in no small part to his own soulful, iconic vocals. Hucknall’s music career started at a Sex Pistols show at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976, an experience which led to the formation of his first band, The Frantic Elevators. A short lived punk band, they only released a few singles before disbanding. Simply Red was formed not long after. Their first three albums produced some international hit singles ("Money's Too Tight (To Mention)", "Holding Back The Years", "The Right Thing" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" being perhaps the most prominent) and gained them some popularity, however it was the release of the band’s fourth album, Stars, that really made Mick Hucknall and the name Simply Red an immortal part of popular music. The album became hugely popular worldwide, with the singles "Stars" and "Something Got Me Started" becoming international hit singles. The band's next album, Life, spawned the popular radio hit "Fairground", which gained them even more popularity. The next few albums leading up to the band's breakup announcement would create yet more hit singles, such as "Say You Love Me" and "The Air That I Breathe" from the album Blue and "Fake", "Sunrise" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New" from the album Home. In 2008 Hucknall released his first solo album, 2008’s Tribute to Bobby. After a farewell tour, the name Simply Red was officially retired. The band’s final concert, which took place at the O2 Arena in 2010, was shown live in cinemas across the UK. 2012 saw the release of Hucknall’s second solo album, American Soul. In 2015 the band reformed, and since then they have released two new albums, Big Love and Blue Eyed Soul.
At the start of his career Hucknall placed heavy emphasis on his high range, a style which peaked fairly early on with Simply Red’s second album Men and Women. After this, he started to settle into the style he has used since then, with the third and fourth octaves being common ground for Mick, and the fifth and second octaves both being fairly rare. Around the releases of Love and the Russian Winter and Home, Hucknall started to explore his lower range more, a trend which ended not long after, though he has seemed more willing to sing lower melodies more often after that point. The album Big Love saw the peak of what Mick’s vocal style had been developing towards at that point: much less high range than previously in his career, with more focus on his mid range. 2019’s Blue Eyed Soul was something of a return to his earlier vocal style, with much more of a highs based approach than he has used in years. Other than that, tonally and otherwise his voice has stayed incredibly consistent, with Hucknall easily adapting his technique around his age. While he occasionally uses falsetto, chest voice is his clear go-to technique. As a live performer, he has been incredibly consistent across his career. Few bands and artists can claim to have had the same long lasting impact on popular music that Simply Red have had. Mick Hucknall has long been a household name, and thanks to the band’s many hit singles, his voice will never be forgotten, a permanent part of pop music history.
