Summary:
Nick Oliveri's music career started in 1987 when he joined the first incarnation of Kyuss as the band's rhythm guitarist, who were at that time called Katzenjammer. He left the following year, but returned in 1991, this time playing bass. The band then proceeded to change their name to Kyuss (a shortened version of their previous name, Sons of Kyuss). He contributed his bass playing to the band's first two albums, after which he again left in 1992. Shortly after he joined the band Dwarves as an on-off bassist. He then formed Mondo Generator in 1997, who have gone on to be one of his longest lasting projects, having released multiple albums with the band. The next year he joined Queens of the Stone Age, who he was a member of until 2004, during which time he was a core contributor to two of the band's albums, Rated R and Songs for the Deaf. Alongside that, he has contributed to and has been a part of many other bands and musical projects.
Oliveri's vocal style hasn't changed much at all over the years. Most of the time he uses an intense punk-style approach to his vocals, lots of high range with varying degrees of distortion. He uses melodic vocals somewhat less often, though they're still fairly prominent in his music. As a result of his vocal style, he spends the vast majority of his time in his high range, often reaching up to the border between the fourth and fifth octaves. His lower range is very underused, with the lower third octave being rare and the second octave even more so. Out of the multiple bands and projects he has been a part of, Queens of the Stone Age is with little doubt the one he will be best remembered for, though his many musical endeavours, among other things, mean that he has certainly solidified his reputation as a productive (and somewhat morally dubious) musician.
