Summary:
Sarah McLachlan has made a name for herself over the past three decades as one of the finest songwriters of recent history. Starting off her career in the short-lived band The October Game, then swiftly moving on to a solo career after being offered a recording contract with the independent record label Nettwerk, it didn't take long before McLachlan started to receive attention from the music-listening public. Her second album Solace made her well known in Canada, with her third album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy helping her to break through internationally. However it would be her next album, Surfacing, that would solidify her place in music history. As the album that spawned the hit single "Angel", it helped her to become a household name across the world. Later singles, such as "When She Loved Me", have only reinforced her popularity among casual listeners and songwriting aficionados alike. From her well known singles, to the deep cuts, her musical diversity and brilliant musicianship is clear across her discography. Possessing an instantly recognisable voice, and one full of stunning emotional depth, she is one of those artists who seem to only get better with time.
McLachlan’s voice has stayed remarkably consistent over the years, with very little change to any aspect of her vocals. Her vocal style has also remained pretty much unchanged, with perhaps the only difference being that she used her high range up to its extremes more often in the first few years of her career than she would later do. She uses her lower range most often down to the mid-third octave, with anything lower than that being somewhat rare. Her high range is utilised mostly with a soft chest, head voice or falsetto technique, with full-on belting being extremely rare. McLachlan's influence has reached beyond the world of music and into the lives of the general public, a feat achieved not only by her recording catalogue but also by her many efforts in the world of charity and philanthropy, not least among these the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, a program that provides music education for children, which has been operating for over a decade. McLachlan is certainly a well-loved musician by many around the world, and will continue to be for a very long time.
