Summary:
Tom Smith is best known as the lead vocalist, keyboardist and occasional guitarist of the band Editors. Smith met his future bandmates while studying Music Technology at Staffordshire University. Formed in 2002, the band went through various name changes, eventually settling on Editors, and released their debut album The Back Room. Since then the band has grown in popularity, and have evolved significantly from their initial sound, bringing in more electronic influences alongside their more guitar based sound. In 2011 a collaboration between Smith and Andy Burrows was announced, named Smith & Burrows. It has to be addressed that claims of Smith having a range of D3 - B7 (according to a certain online article by a certain newspaper) are entirely unfounded and incorrect.
Smith’s vocal style has changed considerably over time, with him initially favouring his mid-range above all else, and his lower range being used more often than his high range, though neither, especially the latter, as extensively as they would later become. As time has passed, he has become more adventurous with his voice, and both his higher chest voice and his falsetto register have become steadily more frequent in his music. The mid-fourth octave is the point at which he usually transitions from chest voice to falsetto, though on a couple of occasions he has utilised a "connected" sound up higher into the fourth octave. His lower range is also used relatively often, and has probably been more consistent since the beginning of his career than his higher range. He sings most often down to around the upper-mid second octave, with anything below that being much rarer. Tom Smith's more mid-range based approach is a breath of fresh air in the midst of the many vocalists who focus on the extreme ends of their range. Alongside that, his ability to evolve musically while maintaining a recognisable sound is certainly an admirable quality. Definitely an artist to keep an eye on, as is it always interesting to hear what he does next.
