Summary:
While his career has not been the most extensive, with appearances becoming more and more rare since the initial breakup of Rage Against the Machine in 2000, Zack de la Rocha has still made his voice heard by many. Before RATM, De la Rocha played in a couple of bands, such as Juvenile Expression and Hard Stance (the latter of which later evolved into the band Inside Out). Shortly after the dissolution of the aforementioned band, Rage Against the Machine was formed. A staple of 90s rock, RATM had a short run of nine years before breaking up, during which they became well known for their strong political views and activism. Post-breakup, De la Rocha did guest appearances and little else until 2007, when he joined his former RATM bandmates to reunite briefly until 2011, as well as forming the short lived duo One Day as a Lion in 2008. Since 2011, De la Rocha's musical work has gone back to being occasional guest appearances.
While it is somewhat difficult to get a very accurate idea of how his voice has aged given the fairly sparse vocal material at various points in his career, it seems to have aged well, with his vocals sounding pretty much the same on his recent appearances as it did in the 90s with RATM. Chest voice is De la Rocha's vocal register of choice, with almost no examples of anything else other than a few falsetto woos in a few songs. He appears to be very comfortable throughout the fourth octave, which is where most of his vocals reside. His lower register is much rarer, most often used for dynamic effect in quieter parts of songs. De la Rocha's music (and the messages the former give a voice to) have shown their longevity already, given how popular Rage Against the Machine still is today despite not having been active since 2011. His strong opinions and activism work made him a figurehead of political music in the 90s, and his influence will be felt for as long as politics and music coincide.
