Summary:
Known for lending his iconic, raspy vocals to the sound of the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, and to a greater extent songs like "Love Hurts" and "This Flight Tonight", but also for his wistful, clean vocals on songs like "Dream On" and "Where Are You Now". Dan McCafferty's career is full of influence, being one of the forerunners of the '70s hard rock movement, essentially pioneering the immensely raspy and high vocal approach along with Bon Scott and the like, Axl Rose being a particular admirer of Dan's voice. Despite his prolific and incredibly consistent career with Nazareth since the late 1960s, even being named "most promising new rock band" at one point and establishing international audience with their "Hair of the Dog" album, since the 1980s Nazareth's popularity dwindled, and nowadays Dan is often sadly pushed to the sidelines in favour of the more commercially successful people he himself has influenced.
Dan's voice in its prime, in the 1970s, was definitely something to behold; his signature being resonant, raspy fifth octave wailing akin to the likes of Brian Johnson, Dan's voice having a few extra benefits like being weightier, chestier, and his technique a bit more refined. Past his prime, since the 1980s, Dan started refining his cleaner vocals more, more often singing in a wistful tone and reaching into his surprisingly dark low register more often. Despite developing more areas of his voice, Dan never seemed to lose his ability to sound raspy, meanwhile accumulating quite the vocal range for himself over time. His health took a rather steep drop in the late 2000s, because of his smoking habits, and he retired from touring with Nazareth in 2013, lending his weathered but great voice for one last album "Rock 'N' Roll Telephone", leaving behind one of the most respectable legacies in the history of rock music. at 70-years-old, Dan claims he's still not done yet, though, as he occasionally still performs around the world when he can and has toyed around with the idea of another studio album.
