Summary:
Known mainly for fronting the inventive and playful ska rock band No Doubt with her platinum blonde looks and distinctive, mellow but somehow light voice, experiencing a resurgence in popularity after appearing as a judge on The Voice, Gwen Stefani is one of the most mainstream rockstars in the music industry of today. Initially starting her solo effort as more of a hip hop artist, she now has more of a "pop diva" styled approach to it, as opposed to the consistently punky attitude of No Doubt although even they embraced poppier elements on their latest album. Despite not being a particularly old artist, Gwen has already made it to numerous Greatest Women In Music lists and has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
Gwen's vocal approach, especially on No Doubt's first three albums, is nothing short of quirky as she employs a wide range of fairly light head voice and her trademark rapid vibrato at quite high pitches resulting in a unique sound that can be an acquired taste for some. Despite her light approach, Gwen likes to darken her tone quite a bit which results in quite a mellow mid range tone that sounds pleasant, but because of her extensive darkening her belts suffer greatly as she rarely makes it past E♭5 despite being a fairly higher set soprano. Occasionally using a fair amount of distortion in screams on live versions of songs like "Excuse Me Mr." and "Just A Girl", Gwen's chest voice can seem even a bit too heavy at times, making it somewhat difficult to determine her vocal placement. Because of the cutesy inflections Gwen puts on, her diction suffers a lot on her early output. As she drifted on to more of a "pop diva" type personality recently, her distinctive tone is still present but she's left the erratic babyish mannerisms of her ska days in the past, and has refined her chesty approach a bit resulting in little vocal deterioration and a career that's still going strong.
A more accurate version of this thread is to be posted. This is merely a bit of housekeeping, and you should not expect an answer from me on any of these notes.
