Summary:
Since the early days of fronting Montrose and going solo, to singing for Van Halen and forming the supergroup Chickenfoot, Sammy Hagar has employed his wailing Plant-inspired vocals with little to no decline in vocal quality. Hence, Sammy is a tenor in a long line of tenors who have used their belting range to very consistent effect, yet possesses a strong lower register which he uses to frustratingly little avail. Sammy prefers to employ his head voice for his highest notes and his belting range sounds twangy and distorted, some have even described it as "whiny", saving his barely existent falsetto register - along with his low notes - for quieter numbers.
Sammy is also a fairly consistent live performer, jumping around stage, belting out C5s and wailing into the upper 5th octave sometimes while playing guitar at the same time, which is definitely impressive considering his age. However, vocally, his live performances - save for a few - often pale in comparison to his soaring studio takes. With age, he has also come to sound uncannily like his influence, Robert Plant, and has recently formed the band the Circle, playing his old hits and doing rather vocally demanding covers of Led Zeppelin's work.
