Anna Mae Bullock
Voice Type: Wild Mezzo of Rock
Vocal Range: A2 - F6
Associated Acts: Ike & Tina Turner (1960 - 1976), Solo (1974 – present)
{Vocal Summary}Ever since the beginning of her career, Tina was noted for her highly impressive vocals, as what was originally planned to be a "dummy track" for the then-lead of The Kings of Rhythm convinced Ike Turner's record company to keep her voice on the final recording, becoming the 1960s hit "A Fool In Love". Her distinctive raspy sound is present even on the first album with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, with Tina often pulling off borderline-manic sounding 6th-octave vocals during this period in particular, and while her wildcat-esque screams were toned down a bit as her career went on to her iconic solo effort, tonally Tina has remained a phenomenally consistent singer especially considering the heavy, low-laryngeal rasp she puts her voice through frequently. This incredible consistency is definitely what has made her the best-selling live artist she is today, and one that deserves respect after a semi-retirement from touring for being such a powerhouse performer for many decades. Retrospectively, while her voice has been described along with similarly raspy artists like Janis Joplin as being "full of pain", Tina's music stirs a relatable sense of nostalgia that is unlike any of her contemporaries, which upon being heard by most anyone invokes the notion, that's Tina Turner, and will indubitably carry generations of music to come in her wake.

Summary:
Bearing a complicated history with one of the world's most renowned R&B ensembles and eventually freeing herself from its grasp, starting a massively successful solo career recognized as one of the most prolific rock 'n' roll acts in history, Tina Turner's story is a true triumph through adversity, remembered by fans and non-fans alike, it's become as iconic as her music itself, if not more. Her pioneering of soul music in the 1960s with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue as one of the most explosive of all R&B ensembles was only matched by that of James Brown in terms of musical spectacle, and after years of struggling with tyrannical contractual obligations Tina broke free into a solo career spawning multiple international 1980s hits and selling more concert tickets than any other solo performer in history, effectively overshadowing Ike in terms of status as a musical icon. One of the world's best-selling artists of all time, termed the most successful female rock 'n' roll artist, Tina has been referred to by many as The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll.
{General Vocal Timeline}1960 - 1965: Tina is taught voice control and performing during this period, and she sounds absolutely wild on her debut, frequently going up to raspy head voice screams in the mid-fifth and low-sixth octaves, and while showcasing effortless chest voice control, her belts are perhaps a bit "cleaner" and her larynx is considerably higher than what her signature raspy sound would become. There are even hints of soft palate compression technique, but it never becomes fully realised from this point on. Strong low notes appear in the form of mid-third octave here, but they are far outweighed by a concentration on belting.
Standout performances: "I'm Jealous", "You Can't Love Two"
1965 - 1969: During this period Tina's low notes take a considerable leap in improvement, as she starts getting a hold of her larynx-control more, and she starts developing the ever-iconic low-laryngeal rasp on the classic "River Deep Mountain High" album. Tina busts out her first great performances during this period, with even wilder re-recordings of her debut material, and her voice being just short of full bloom on the aforementioned album. While Tina's belting still takes precedence over everything else during this period, her low notes get one chance to shine and are reaching incredibly comfortably into the utmost low-third octave on the "Outta Season" album.
Standout performances: "I Idolize You", "River Deep Mountain High"
1969 - 1977: Despite the decline of Ike and his band the performances here show Tina at most likely her wildest ever, Sadly widely available albums from this period of Ike & Tina are rare, but from the recordings that are available, this is Tina's vocal peak in the immensely aggressive style that she became known for with Ike's band. Her rasp is like second nature now, and she flirts with the sixth octave with it quite often, and while not particularly reliably this era has the most consistent sixth-octave notes we've got by Tina. Her low register is developing more and more here with very dark and ever-improving consistency on the "Workin' Together" album.
Standout performances: "I Wanna Jump", "Never Been To Spain"
1977 - 1983: Breaking out of Ike's band took quite a bit out of Tina during this period as she settles into a solo career. Her first two records have a funky flavour to them, and even though her solo albums consistently utilise Tina's overall vocal range to a much greater extent than the Ike & Tina albums did, tonally she sounds much cleaner than previously. The former half of this period is Tina being as consistent as ever, but during the latter half Tina recedes into the cabaret circuit, and there are no particularly significant developments during this time, even though her vocals aren't particularly bad during this period as her low notes and high belts are still as present as always.
Standout performances: "Viva La Money", "Music Keeps Me Dancin'"
1983 - 1989: Tina concentrates on getting her solo career back on track with the '80s smash hits she's most known for. She has a distinctly darker tone on her hugely successful "Private Dancer" album, and she makes the best out of her vocal range with low harmonies and better-than-ever head voice, although her rasp losing some of its chainsaw-esque quality at this point. Easily the most diverse period vocally in Tina's career, while she's not reaching up to her utmost highest reaches as frequently anymore she's experimenting with new sounds that her solo career allows more for. Her technique is a more refined one, suited for an older singer, here as well.
Standout performances: "What's Love Got To Do With It", "We Don't Need Another Hero", "The Best"
1989 - 1999: An increasingly weathered, but still consistent, tone starts becoming a noticeable part of Tina's voice here. She seems to still be able to belt out all the hits with considerable passion and ease, her belts and head voice sounding relatively the same as in the '80s but overall she sounds like a much more lower-placed version of her 1980s-self, and her tone is much heavier when belting, as notes like B4 start sounding much higher for Tina than before. A distinct rasp is starting to come into effect in her speaking voice as well, showing signs of aging, a well-deserved semi-retirement is announced at the end of this period, allowing Tina to go out on a high note (literally).
Standout performances: "Goldeneye"
1999 - present: The grandma in Tina's voice is starting to come out after her announcement of a semi-retirement at the beginning of this period. The loose singles from the former part of this era have her sounding just like in the '90s, and 2009 has her going at one final celebration tour in which resurrects some of her greatest performances from her past with incredible consistency, showing she can still hit all the notes. More recently, while her tone isn't nearly as lush as it used to be, and her low notes sound kind of "choked" at times, the recordings during this era are all of very consistent quality, which is more than respectable considering Tina's age at this point.
Standout performances: "Open Arms"
Standout performances: "I'm Jealous", "You Can't Love Two"
